The flood situation in different districts of Bangladesh like Noakhali, Feni, Comilla, Lakshmipur, and Chandpur is getting grave. Millions of people and helpless animals are at risk.

The flood in the river was flowing 86 centimeters above the danger level in the Muhuri, Kohua, and Silonaiya rivers on Wednesday, August 21. In no way have the floodwaters spared the roads and housesamongst other structures. Three upazilas are facing grave humanitarian crises along with more than 200,000 people.

While a person was reportedly missing on Tuesday, August 20, even until the Wednesday morning, no trace of that person had so far been traced. Their identification is not disclosed yetwhile many others are rescued alive locals say.

Three days of continuous heavy rainfall and flash floods from upstream in India have reportedly caused the humanitarian disaster. More than 40 villages in Fulgazi upazilas Sadar Union, Anandapur, Munshirhat, and Amjadhat unions have been flooded. Over 45 villages in Parshurams Mirzanagar, Chithlia, Boxmahmud, and the municipal town remain submerged. Several villages in Chhagalnaiyas Pathan Nagar, Radhanagar, and Shubhopur unions are also affected by the flooding.

Continuous rains and the resultant flash floodwaters gushing down from India’s mountainous region through 27 broken portions of the flood protective embankment along Muhuri, Kohua and Silonaiya rivers have spilled into local areas, said Sub-Divisional Engineer of Water Development Board Md. Abul Kashem.

He added that 15 points of Muhuri, Kohua, and Silonaiya rivers breached in the beginning of the last month. After temporary repairs, 12 more points were damaged early this month, which submerged over 100 villages. The damage of infrastructure, rice, crops, and fish was over 300 million BDT. On the overall scenario, Parshuram Upazila Executive Officer Afroza Habib Shapla said, “Water is entering local areas through 12 broken portions of the river across different areas under the upazila. More than 50 villages have gone underwater, leaving over 100,000 people stranded by the floodwaters. The water level of the river is flowing above the danger mark. In preparation for disaster management, 500 packets of dry food and 50 tons of rice have been stockpiled.”

Fulgazi Upazila Executive Officer (UNO) Tania Bhuiyan said, “Floodwaters have submerged 40 villages of three unions in the upazila, trapping several thousand families. The strong current is still bringing water into the local areas.”

Local administration and various volunteer organizations, meanwhile, have provided relief assistance to the flood-hit peopleMembers of the army, Border Guard Bangladesh or BGB, Coast Guard, and fire service are engaged in aid and rescue operations.
