Without any prior warning, Israel launched the attack on Beirut at around 4 a.m. local time yesterday, Saturday. Israeli media reports claim that the target was an attempt to assassinate a senior official of Hezbollah, Lebanon’s armed group.

The explosion was so powerful that its impact was felt across the city of Beirut. In Beirut’s densely populated Basta neighborhood, the attack destroyed at least an eight-story residential building.

Lebanon’s national news agency says bunker buster bombs were used. Israel has used these before to target Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah and other high-ranking Hezbollah members.

The death toll has gone up to 20 from 15. Emergency teams are still trying to rescue people under the rubble of the building.

Lebanon’s Ministry of Health stated that more than 60 people were injured in the incident, and the number of casualties could rise further.

It was a terrifying explosion. The force of it shattered the windows, and all the glass fell onto my wife and children. My home now looks like a battlefield.

Ali Nasser, a 55-year-old resident of a building near the destroyed one, said, It was a terrifying explosion. The force shattered the windows, and all the glass fell on my wife and children. My home now looks like a battlefield.”

Expressing his anger over the Israeli attack, Ali Nasser added, If even one person is hiding here, does that justify bombing a place where people are sleeping? Is it necessary to kill everyone for one person? Or are we not humans? want to know.

Israel’s military carried out a bombing in Beirut on Saturday (Reuters).

Israel’s state broadcaster Kan claimed that the attack was an attempt to assassinate one of Hezbollah’s senior leaders, Mohammad Haidar.

Hezbollah lawmaker Amin Sherri stated that their organization’s leaders were not in the building. However, the situation regarding Mohammed Haidar remains unclear.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) have not made any comments on the matter.

The IDF also conducted airstrikes yesterday in the Dahiyeh area of southern Beirut. The military stated that the targeted buildings were associated with Hezbollah.

Israel carried out additional airstrikes in southern Lebanon on the same day. Israeli ground forces are also conducting operations in the region.

Lebanon’s Ministry of Health reported that another Israeli airstrike in the eastern city of Baalbek killed at least 15 people, including four children.

Israel has intensified its campaign against the Iran-backed Hezbollah group in Lebanon for the past two weeks. Meanwhile, international efforts are underway to establish a ceasefire between the two sides.

Progress has been made in efforts to end the yearlong conflict between Israel and Hezbollah. However, Israel carried out these actions yesterday. Amos Hochstein, who is leading the diplomatic efforts of the Biden administration, held discussions with Lebanese and Israeli officials this week to advance the U.S. draft agreement for peace.

A senior Lebanese official has stated that both Hezbollah and Iran have shown interest in signing a treaty to end the conflict with Israel.

Last Wednesday, Hezbollah’s Secretary General, Naeem Qassem, said they had received a proposal from the United States for a peace agreement. However, as a condition for signing the agreement, he stated that Israel must completely end its hostility and respect Lebanon’s sovereignty. Otherwise, they are prepared to continue the fight in the long term.

Since October of last year, over 3,670 people have been killed in Israeli attacks in Lebanon, and at least 15,400 people have been injured. Lebanese authorities report that due to Israeli strikes, more than one million people have been forced to flee their homes.
